Bookmarks March 2013

Links I’ve found useful in March 2013:

  • What is the ‘user experience’ thing? – a neat poster by Sift Digital explaining what user experience is, what it’s for and who does it.
  • Government Digital Service Content Design Principles – style guide for written content on the GOV.UK website.
  • Designing For The Reading Experience by Mark Dugonjić – “With the rise of Web fonts as well as affordable hosted Web font services and ready-made kits, typography is reclaiming its title as design queen, ruler of all graphic and Web design.”
  • Typetester – Compare fonts for the screen – useful tool to compare screen readability of up to three fonts at once.
  • The 2012 Feltron Annual Report – Nicholas Felton’s annual report visualising his personal metrics collected through a custom iPhone app. A graphical treat.
  • Crafting Intentional Content – Web Standards Sherpa – article by Stephanie Hay, a usability-focused copywriter and information architect, on the intersection of copywriting and good web page design.
  • WebAIM’s WCAG 2.0 Checklist for HTML documents – The language in the W3C’s official specification can be difficult to interpret into the practical things you need to do. WebAIM’s checklist, while not official or comprehensive, makes it easier to implement Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) recommendations by providing simple instructions.
  • ImageOptim – “optimizes images — so they take up less disk space and load faster — by finding best compression parameters and by removing unnecessary comments and color profiles. It handles PNG, JPEG and GIF animations.”
  • Simple Icons – icons for popular web services (Facebook, Spotify, Skydrive, Dropbox, etc) in a range of sizes with the background colour defined in accordance with each service’s brand guidelines.
